2013 Round Up

2013 has been a pretty big year for me.  I started this blog and expanded Flails and Nails across over social media, as well as completing and graduating from my Masters course.  2014 will hopefully be even better, with more blogging and hopefully the start of my PhD research (if I make up my mind about what I want to study!) but here are the top five posts on Flails and Nails decided by you guys.

(Click on the pictures to go to the post)

#1 GoT: House Lannister

#2 GoT: House Baratheon

#3 Pastel Stripey Floral Nails

#4 Inspired by True Blood (Sookie Stackhouse)

#5 Get the Look: Turquoise Nails

Since this blog was started so that I could talk more in depth about the film and television shows that continue to inspire my nail art, I'm really glad about the popularity of the fandom related nails and of course, I'm happy that florals are loved as well because I'm not too sure what I will do for you guys come Spring because it will all be about the floral patterns!

Do you agree with the most popular posts on Flails and Nails as viewed by the audience or has your favourite been neglected?  Let me know in the comments below and be sure to follow me to be kept up to date with all the happenings on Flails and Nails :-)  Until next time and HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Monday, 30 December 2013

Hi there!  I hope you all had a great Christmas and got everything you wished for.  Sorry for the lack of posts this past week but the Yuletide season, combined with being sick and working the past weekend meant that the blog was a little neglected but hopefully that will all change come the New Year!

To all those party animals who will be out all hours on the 31st/1st, I hope these nails will provide a little inspiration for a manicure that will complete your party look.

High glamour is always on the agenda for any New Year's Eve ensemble (unless like me you are more likely to be in your jim jams eating prawn toast but whatevs) so metallics and shimmers are a must.  It took all of my power NOT to use Goldeneye so I thought I'd go for a similar polish but in silver.

I used Smoke 'n' Mirrors as a base for Her Royal Shine-ness so that the silver is as saturated as possible, applied the polka dots (I tried to do a graduated effect on my middle and little finger but it didn't really work out) and then a coat of silver glitter to give a faux-textured effect.  These nails really catch the light and look as though you have fashioned some press-on nails with aluminium foil.  The top coat of glitter gives a nod to the top nail trend of 2013, texture, without being actually textured.

This is a no-fuss, high impact look that will go with any number of colour combos and outfit choices.

What are you doing to bring in the New Year?  Let me know here, or by any of my other sites.  Until next time :-)

Lebkuchen Nails

Frohe Weihnachten!  Or Merry Christmas!  These nails are a little bit whimsical and inspired by those little German gingerbread biscuits you see this time of year.

Jacava Gift Box - Shaftsbury Avenue

So a week and a bit ago, I was lucky enough to win Jacava's latest giveaway on Facebook which was for the 'Shaftsbury Avenue' gift box which had four different polishes and their top coat.  I just thought I'd let you guys see the gift box since I thought you might be interested in this sort of thing.  Obviously, it makes a great gift and although it might be a little late for Christmas (you could chance it!), it'll make a great birthday present for a nail polish enthusiast.

The polishes came in this great magnetic gift box and you had to search REALLY hard through the paper to find the polishes.  The gift box was also packed into a cardboard box with loads of bubble wrap so you can be assured that your polishes will arrive in one piece.
The polishes in this particular box set are (L-R) Toffee Apple, Crimson Crush, Blueberry Muffin and Purple Passion

It's finally time to change all of my biographies since I'm officially a graduate for the second time!  Not much to show you guys but I thought you might be interested in my nails for the day.

So as I might have mentioned before on the blog (or never shut up about), I've been doing a Masters degree for the past year (September 2012-September 2013) and I graduated this week.  I've never been to a Winter graduation before so it was a bit strange for it to be so cold but unbelievably, it was brighter than my previous graduation and at least it didn't rain (we got some good photos).

You can see in my last graduation photo that I have strawberries on my nails because it was a theme for my accessories (hair clip and wedges) but since I was graduating from my post-grad degree, I thought I'd be a little bit more grown up (as grown up as nail art can be LOL) and went for this simple chevron design.  It references the hood I wore which represents my degree (M.A).  The colours all match up but the proportion of the colours have been changed as I wanted the light blue to be my base rather than the burgundy.  I used the nail polish brush for the burgundy tips and a striper brush for the metallic blue accents.  I added the black gems to draw in a bit of black from my gown.

Apologies for the poor photos of late guys, the light has been so dim when I have a chance to take photos (or remember to) so I seem to end up with some lacklustre photos as I can't slow down the shutter speed too much because I don't have a tripod and so my pictures get blurry so I'm sorry but hopefully, in the words of D.Ream, things can only get better.

Wooly Winter Warmers

So this will be as cheesy as my nails get this festive season, I promise!  Trying to emulate the styles of The Illustrated Nail and Nancy Mc, I wanted to recreate some of favourite Christmas jumper designs on my nails.  Follow me under the cut to see the original inspirations and how successful I was in my endeavour :-)

Christmas Baubles

So this is the first in my more 'glamourous' manicures for Christmas, I guess.  There are 50 gems across my two hands and while it may look complicated, it is quite simple to do, just rather time consuming.

Ding Dong Merrily On High

And so we begin the festive themed posts!  I will hopefully be splitting my festive nail art between traditional, if not cheesy, themed nail art and more glamourous, holiday party looks.  I will also be posting my top picks for Winter polishes, as well as a Bargain Hunter's Guide to Nail Polish Shopping and hopefully this will become a regular feature, almost like a newsletter compiling all the best deals to be had in the world of nail polish (and beauty in general)

So let's get on with the show!
